Keeping on this theme of beginnings I've just been reminded and have now pulled off a very high shelf a first Penguin paperback edition of Homer's The Odyssey translated by E.V. Homer is credited with writing the Odyssey, but there is some question as to whether he actually wrote the story, or if he composed it for relaying orally. Rieu, E.V., (1991) , translated Homer's, The Odyssey London-New York: Penguin Books. Rieu's translation of the Odyssey (for instance) gave me a powerful sense of the sea: the treacherous complexities of its tides and currents. There is also I first encountered the Fitzgerald translation of the Odyssey. Rieu's translation, which was first available in the 1940s. Rieu's revision of his father, E.V. My personal favourite is the translation by E. Not if box office takings head up the list of priorities.
